Rotary Club of Kolkata Jadabpur has recorded Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Niskriti for our library. This audio book has been read out by two very good readers, Tapan chakraborty and Dalia Chakraborty. It has been edited with professional skills. We convey our heartiest thanks to Rotary Club of Kolkata Jadabpur. Niskriti is one of the best known stories of Sharat Chandra on the theme of ethical motherhood and family protection. Many of us must have read the story already. We hope, they will enjoy listening to this high quality audio version. Let us hope also that we shall receive more audio books from rotary Club of Kolkata Jadabpur.
The organisation has started a podcast site with some of its Bengali stories recorded for its library of audio books. You can listen to or download these stories at

Bengali audio books are not yet a popular medium of entertainment or education. Recitations in records and cassettes are popular for a long time. But there has hardly been any attempt to simply read out a story in Bengali. Kaji Sabyasachi read two stories in a cassette. It was not a commercial success. Akash Bani Kolkata broadcast classic novels and short stories read out by Shobhan Lal Mukhopadhyay and Ranjan Mitra. Although they are publishing many of their audio productions from their archive, they have so far not yet explored the possibilities of audio books.
Audio Book is a popular genre in English and other western languages. Audio versions of novels are published almost simultaneously in the western countries. Amitav Ghosh’s The River of Smoke and Aravind Adega’s The Last Man in Tower published were accompanied by their audio editions. Inspired perhaps by the success of the film and of course by the excellent story, Beyond Bangla Borders brought out Sunil Gangopadhyay’s Moner Manush in 2010. It will occupy one of the top places in the history of Bengali audio books. Soumitra Chattopadhyay’s unique reading and role of Lalan and the author’s role as Kabiraj are additional attractions of the book. Although no address is available on the DVD cover, it may be purchased from a CD store in Kolkata for Rs. 200.
Books Talk has produced three Bengali audio books along with audio books in Kannada and English. These titles include Tagore's Kabuliwallah & Other Short Stories, Noshtoneed and Sunil Gangopadhyay’s Kakababu Stories. These books are read by Ranjan and Rinku Ghoshal and follow the conventions of the western audio books. These books are marked by reading of professional quality and free from music and sound effects. The price is quite reasonable, Rs. 125 on an average. For details, contact
